Metro library opened at Haishan District

“On the way to work and home, you can conveniently borrow and read books, which provides spiritual comfort for everyone in our fast-paced society,” said a woman surnamed Feng while borrowing books in Haishan Station on Line 8, where the “Shenzhen Metro Library” is located.

The small “library” covers an area of about 60 square meters. In fact, it is a reading corner set up by Shenzhen Metro and the Yantian District Library. The area is adorned with hand-painted patterns of sea, mountains, waves and local landmarks, highlighting the scenery and culture of Haishan Station.

The “library” is equipped with a smart terminal whereby readers can borrow or return books by having their ID or readers’ cards scanned. There is also a reading area for passengers to read while sitting.

In recent years, Yantian District has encouraged residents to read more by establishing 10 distinctive libraries, including the Dengta, Yujian and Tinghai libraries.

According to Feng, her time on the subway is dedicated to reading. So she usually borrows books and return them at the station. Under her influence, many of her relatives and friends have also embraced such a reading habit.

“Reading books on the subway” has gradually become a lifestyle for many citizens. Yantian District will organize and carry out interactive activities related to reading during the summer vacation to encourage more people to participate in reading.
