Four sporting events to stage in Yantian

From: Shenzhen Daily | Updated:2023-11-09

As part of the country bundles up for winter, Shenzhen still embraces the mild climate and will host a series of sports competitions along its picturesque coastal line from November through December.

Over two action-packed months, Yantian, the city’s seaside district, will play host to four sporting events that are sure to captivate spectators. These include the 2023 Asian Championships and Shenzhen iQFOiL International Games, the 2023 Chinese Triathlon League Finals (Shenzhen Yantian), the inaugural Yantian International Cycling Race, and the “Shenzhen 100” Cross-country Race.

Kicking off the festivities is the 2023 Asian Championships and Shenzhen iQFOiL International Games, the first-ever top-notch windsurfing event to be held in China. From Nov. 7 to 14, the Dameisha International Water Sports Center in Yantian welcomes 162 players, coaches, and technical officials from 15 countries and regions, including 86 international participants. Notably, hometown heroine Chen Peina, who secured the runner-up position in women’s windsurfing at the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics, will grace the event as a technical official. The national windsurfing team will also vie for glory in this A-level international sporting event.

iQFOiL is a format of windsurfing in which the main difference with the old Olympic format, RS:X, is that a foil replaces the daggerboard. So, instead of floating, the board appears to fly thanks to the use of hydrofoils attached to the bottom of the board that lift the board completely out of the water at planing speeds. iQFOiL will replace RS:X as the windsurfing class at the Olympic Games Paris 2024.

Following closely on its heels is the highly anticipated 2023 Chinese Triathlon League Finals (Shenzhen Yantian) on Dec. 10. The Dameisha Coastal Park and its surrounding areas will serve as the battleground for over 1,000 athletes competing across three grueling sections: swimming, cycling, and running. The park will also witness the inaugural Yantian International Cycling Race on Dec. 17, attracting more than 700 participants to test their mettle on the scenic course.

Rounding off the series of exhilarating events is the first-ever “Shenzhen 100” Cross-country Race at OCT East on Dec. 30. This thrilling race offers participants four distinct routes to choose from, ranging from 10 kilometers to an impressive 100 kilometers, promising an adrenaline-fueled experience for all.

As Yantian prepares to welcome athletes and spectators from near and far, the district has also curated two captivating tour routes for visitors to explore. The first route takes enthusiasts along the Seaside Walkway, offering breathtaking views of the Golden Coastal Sightseeing Yacht and Dameisha Coastal Park, ending at the Dameisha International Water Sports Center. The second route showcases Yantian’s scenic spots, including Wutong Mountain, the Sanzhoutian Reservoir, and OCT East.
