Summer-like weather returns to city

From: Shenzhen Daily | Updated:2023-10-12

HOPES of an early autumn in Shenzhen have been put on hold as summer-like weather stages a comeback, pushing back the transition to cooler temperatures.

Shenzhen Meteorological Observatory confirmed the weakening and dissipation of Typhoon Koinu over the sea Tuesday, heralding the return of warm temperatures and sunny skies in the days to come.

From today through Monday, the weather is forecast to be mostly sunny, with temperatures steadily increasing. The air will be relatively dry, with the mercury possibly soaring to a high of 30°C.

October’s weather forecast indicates an average temperature of 26°C, slightly higher than usual. In the second half of the month, the city is expected to experience drier conditions with less rainfall, and the weather will gradually become cooler.

Regarding a temperature drop that signals the arrival of autumn, the observatory refers to climate statistics from the past 30 years (1991-2020). On average, Shenzhen’s autumn onset occurs Nov. 8, which is a five-day delay compared to the previous 30-year period (1981-2010) when it typically arrived Nov. 3. This data suggests that Shenzhen’s summer is not expected to end quickly, and autumn may arrive later.

The observatory has reminded residents to remain vigilant despite reduced rainfall. Accumulated rainfall in recent days has saturated the soil, increasing the risk of geological disasters. People are advised to be cautious and take measures against landslides and mudslides.
