From: Shenzhen Daily | Updated:2023-12-01

Diverse forms of traditional Chinese art and cuisine were on display at the Intangible Cultural Heritage in Communities culture festival in OH Bay, Bao'an District, on Nov. 30. Among these cultural legacies, the Fish Lantern Dance from Shatoujiao caught visitors' attention with its colorful lanterns shaped like carp and the performance by male residents of Shalanxia Village from Yantian District's Shatoujiao area. The dance originated in the late Ming Dynasty and early Qing Dynasty, making it a unique folk dance from Shalangxia Village in Shatoujiao. It is popular both in Yantian's Shatoujiao area and in the New Territories of Hong Kong, becoming an essential performance for festivals, worshiping gods and ancestors, and celebrating bountiful harvests. With a history of over 300 years, the craft of lantern making and the dance performance have been passed down to this day.
