Residents in Yantian District, Liantang in Luohu District, Guanlan in Longhua District, and Futian Bonded Zone in Futian District woke up yesterday to find commuting easier as four new Metro sections were put into service.

The four sections are Phase I of Line 8, Phase III of Line 2, the southern extension of Line 3, and Phase III of Line 4.

So far, there are 11 Metro lines with 283 stations in operation across the city, extending a total of more than 400 kilometers, according to Shenzhen Metro Group.

The 3.9-kilometer Phase III of Line 2 runs from Xinxiu to Liantang stations in Luohu District with three stations, and is crucial for the development of the eastern side of the city because it connects Liantang Checkpoint, the seventh land border crossing facility between Shenzhen and Hong Kong.

From Liantang Station, the line seamlessly connects with Phase I of Line 8 that starts at Wutong Mountain South Station in Luohu District and ends at Yantian Road Station in Yantian District, which frees passengers the trouble of transfer.

Line 8 is the first Metro line in Yantian.

Yantian residents gather at the opening ceremony of Metro Line 8 yesterday.

The 10.8-kilometer Phase III of Line 4 runs from Qinghu to Niuhu stations in Longhua District. It will bring residents in Guanlan access to the Metro service. It has eight stations, including Changhu Station, an interchange station with Metro Line 18 that is under planning; Songyuan Station, an interchange station with the future Line 22; and Guanlan Station, an interchange station with the Longhua tram line.

An entire trip of Line 4, 31.3 kilometers from Futian Checkpoint to Niuhu stations, takes 51 minutes.

The southern extension of Line 3 runs 1.45 kilometers from Yitian Station to Futian Bonded Zone. It will relieve the difficulty of commuters working inside the zone. Prior to yesterday, Metro commuters headed to the zone needed to take buses or ride shared bikes after exiting Yitian Station and the trip took about 20 minutes. The opening of the extension shortens the trip down to only 2 minutes.

“I live in Longgang and work in Futian Bonded Zone. I was sometimes late for work because I had to catch a bus after getting off the Metro train at Yitian Station. The extension saves me at least 10 minutes,” said a resident surnamed Shang.

A total of six new Metro sections have opened in Shenzhen this year. In the coming years, Shenzhen will construct more than 200 kilometers of Metro lines a year.

In 2021, Phase I of Line 20 is slated to be put into operation, linking Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport with the Shenzhen World Exhibition & Convention Center in Bao’an District.

In 2023, another 149 kilometers of Metro lines will be put into service and the total length of the Metro network is estimated to reach 647 kilometers by 2025 and 1,335 kilometers by 2035.
