The Shenzhen Municipal Ecology Environment Bureau released the country’s first urban biodiversity white paper Saturday, the International Day for Biological Diversity, which reveals that a total of 109 nationally protected species were recorded in Shenzhen.
In terms of vegetation, Shenzhen has 13 types and 98 plant environments, such as evergreen broadleaved forest, evergreen and deciduous broadleaved forest and mangrove forest.
So far, Shenzhen has discovered 585 total species of local land wild vertebrates and 1,916 species of local wild pipe plants.
The city has also seen 109 types of nationally protected animals, including pythons, tiger-printed frogs and macaques, as well as 75 unique species, such as a post-keel snake species, Opisthotropis Shenzhenensis, and an orchid species, Cleisostoma Simondii.
Moreover, there are 54 species of wild ancient relic plants recorded in Shenzhen. Shenzhen boasts having spotted one fourth of the total bird species discovered in the country.
Shenzhen has spotted a total of 78 species of phytoplankton, 237 species of zooplankton, 70 species of large benthic organisms, 115 species of inter-tidal zone organisms and 139 species of fishery resources, including 89 species of fish, investigation conducted last year showed.
