Shenzhen takes the third place among Chinese cities for comprehensive development, following Beijing and Shanghai, according to China’s Top 100 Cities List released by the Warton Economic Institute, formerly known as Shanghai Institute of Economic Development, on Friday.

The report showed the combined GDP of China’s top 100 cities was 71.81 trillion yuan (US$11.17 trillion) in 2020, taking up 70.68 percent of the country’s total.

Beijing and Shanghai take the first two spots, with comprehensive scores at 94.72 points and 90.31 points, respectively. Shenzhen was measured at 82.14 points, followed by Guangzhou (80.36), Hangzhou (77.27), Nanjing (76.91), Suzhou (74.52), Chengdu (72.23), Wuhan (70.55) and Wuxi (67.40).

At the province level, Jiangsu, Shandong and Guangdong took leading positions, with the most number of cities.

The Warton Economic Institute started compiling the annual list in 2015 by choosing 110 prefecture-level and above cities and ranking the top 100 using indicators of different value, like hard economic indexes and soft economic indexes. The hard economic indexes include GDP, savings and finance, while the soft economic indexes are comprised of environment, education, science, culture and health.
