Yantian Port opens new route for supplies to HK

From: Shenzhen Daily | Updated:2022-04-08

Yantian Port recently opened a new shipping route to Hong Kong to ensure supplies to Hong Kong. The new route, which operates every two days, will offer a monthly supply of goods in 4,500 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), the Shenzhen Municipal Transport Bureau said at a release Wednesday evening.

Before the new route opened, Shenzhen had operated three sea routes to Hong Kong ports since Feb. 19. Shenzhen had sent 42,000 tons of goods in 6,219 TEUs to Hong Kong by sea as of Tuesday.

The opening of the barge route counteracted sea route fare hikes between Shenzhen and Hong Kong.

The port implemented a closed-loop management system over the employees working in the port area, requiring them to travel directly between their workplaces and dormitories, and take daily nucleic acid tests. Truck drivers entering the port area are required to prepare for health codes and nucleic acid test reports in advance to avoid congestions.

The transport bureau, along with government agencies, customs and maritime administration, will work together with the port, as well as shipping and forwarding companies to give priority to fresh vegetables and other essential goods to Hong Kong and support foreign trade companies to stabilize global logistics and supply chain, while keeping the port’s COVID measures tight.

In another development, cargo throughput under the combo port service program of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area reached 54,000 TEUs in the first quarter (Q1) of the year, six times over Q1 in 2021.

Under the program, cargoes from cities in the Pearl River estuary can be transshipped directly to ocean-bound freighters at Shenzhen Port after customs clearance in their respective cities. The simplified measures canceled customs transshipment procedures and saved costs for enterprises.

Four cities in the Pearl River Delta have joined the combined port program that benefits enterprises in Foshan, Zhongshan, Zhuhai and Zhaoqing since the first combo port was initiated between Shekou in Shenzhen and Shunde in the city of Foshan.
