Schools to have daily physical education classes

From: Shenzhen Daily | Updated:2023-12-25

Starting Jan. 1, primary and junior high school students in Shenzhen are set to have daily physical education (PE) classes, as outlined in measures aimed at enhancing physical education in schools that were released recently.

As part of the measures, primary and junior high schools in Shenzhen, which are under the complementary education period, will allocate no less than 30 minutes for sports activities during extended breaks throughout the day.

Shenzhen Luoling Foreign Language Experimental School is exploring an innovative approach to modify its daily schedule from six to seven classes, with each class duration reduced from 40 to 35 minutes. This adjustment allows for the inclusion of an additional class dedicated to physical education.

“To ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of our classes, our teachers are actively exploring the potential of our school facilities and reconfiguring sports courts and venues to facilitate concurrent classes,” Pang Zengnan, head of the school’s physical education team, said.

“We are focused on introducing students to fundamental skills across six sports disciplines,” Pang said.

To achieve this, the school plans to organize specialized sports events tailored to different grade levels annually, encouraging students to participate in martial arts, badminton, soccer, table tennis, basketball, among others.

According to Zhong Yuhao, director of the Lianxin Campus of Liannan Primary School, the school has already established numerous sports associations for diversified activities, such as basketball, taekwondo, Wing Chun, tai chi, and more. These initiatives have significantly raised students’ interest in participating in sports activities. (Chen Siqi)
