Shatoujiao Checkpoint undergoes transformation

From: Shenzhen Daily | Updated:2026-03-12

Following the city government's plan, Yantian District is accelerating the reconstruction of Shatoujiao Checkpoint to facilitate the flow of people and resources between Shenzhen and Hong Kong.

In June 2024, the State Council approved the reconstruction of the checkpoint, a key land port linking eastern Shenzhen and Hong Kong. In August of the following year, demolition work officially began, marking a historic renewal for the aging port.

According to the plan, the new checkpoint will be built across the river and will be used purely for passenger inspection. The daily passenger clearance capacity will be significantly increased to 40,000 passenger trips, representing a huge improvement in clearance efficiency. With close cooperation between Shenzhen and Hong Kong's border inspection authorities, the checkpoint will allow passengers to line up just once and complete clearance at both ends.

As Shenzhen and Hong Kong civil construction authorities have initiated a public tender for the checkpoint project, the facility is expected to adopt a unified architectural style and become a new landmark spanning the Shatoujiao River.

At the end of 2024, the Hong Kong side of Shatoujiao reopened to mainland tourists, welcoming the first group of visitors after more than 70 years. This marked a historic step toward two-way exchanges in Shenzhen-Hong Kong cross-border tourism in the area.

Leveraging geographical proximity and cultural affinity, Yantian District aims to take convenient clearance as the first step toward promoting integrated living and industrial symbiosis with Hong Kong's Northern Metropolis.

The renewed Zhongying Street is one example of this co-development. Following the renovation of the street and the introduction of a convenient online entry booking service, nearly 30 Hong Kong time-honored brands and domestic and international brands have opened stores there. In 2025, the area received nearly 6 million visitors, a year-on-year increase of almost 20%.

The reconstruction of Shatoujiao Checkpoint is not only an infrastructure project but also a strategic effort by Yantian's government to deepen Shenzhen-Hong Kong cooperation.
