Nestled near the blue waters of Dameisha in Yantian District, the new BGI Time-Space Center offers families an immersive mix of life-science exhibits and seaside scenery.
The center weaves DNA double-helix motifs into its architecture and brings 3.8 billion years of biological evolution to life, inviting children to become “junior science explorers.”
A vast mural in the main hall depicts life’s journey from the earliest microbes through the age of dinosaurs to the rise of modern humans.
Outside the exhibition space, a pair of highly realistic triceratops models—complete with detailed skin texture—encourage up-close photo ops and hands-on interaction, adding a Jurassic-style thrill for young visitors.
Inside the main building, visitors can pose beneath a lychee-wood BGI sign and learn about the institute’s mission to apply genomic technology for the benefit of society. A standout feature is the circular observation corridor on the fifth floor, where a transparent glass wall provides a view into an active sequencing laboratory.
Practical details: the center is open year-round from 09:00 to 17:00 but requires advance booking. At present, visits are limited to organized group tours, though the center says it will roll out public open days and educational camps in the future.
Getting there: take Shenzhen Metro Line 8 to Dameisha Station, then a five-minute taxi ride or a 20-minute walk leads to the site. With hands-on exhibits and a coastal setting, the BGI Time-Space Center offers an attractive option for a family day trip that blends play with science.
