From the misty peaks of Mount Wutong to the azure waters of Dameisha and Xiaomeisha, and the meandering coastline, Yantian District is a canvas of natural beauty. Last year, authorities curated over 40 sketching events, transforming the district’s picturesque outdoors into open-air art studios. More than 50,000 creators and passers-by took part, capturing the scenery on their canvases.

Beginning Jan. 18, 2025, various groups — from students and kindergarten children to white-collar workers — have gathered each Saturday morning along the boardwalk in and around Yantian Central Park to paint. Local landmarks like the Lighthouse Library, the impressive stacks of containers at Yantian Port, and the historic Pagoda Park on Zhongying Street have become focal points for artists.

To inspire fresh perspectives, organizers arranged special activities, including a live Qilin dance performance set against a backdrop of mountains and sea. At the inaugural event, 30 teachers and students from Chinese art colleges joined primary and middle school students, creating an opportunity for mentorship and exchange.

“Painting in Yantian is a unique experience,” said Li Jiahe of the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. “Here, you’re not just depicting the scenery — you become part of it.” Another artist shared, “As one of Shenzhen’s most beautiful areas, Yantian offers endless inspiration for artistic expression.”

“Inclusivity is our guiding principle,” said a project manager. “We provide an open platform for everyone to express themselves artistically and strive to turn public spaces into vibrant cultural venues.”
