A ceremony held on March 17 at the Shatoujiao Subdistrict community theater marked the beginning of Yantian’s Social Work Promotion Week, launching a series of events aimed at raising public awareness of social work and its significance.

The ceremony featured live performances, including short plays, songs, and dances, which entertained audiences while also educating them about social work.
Throughout the week, social workers provided free services such as health checkups, psychological counseling, and legal consultations at community parks and public plazas across all subdistricts.
Residents lined up to have their blood pressure and glucose levels tested. Grassrootsmedical staff gave lectures on chronic disease management and first-aid skills, while others offered consultations on laws, regulations, and government policies. A special zone was also set up to engage residents in Q&A sessions and interactive games, helping them understand the role of social workers and how to seek help.

Professional social work services have developed rapidly in Yantian in recent years, with more than 160 professionals currently working at grassroots service centers. Together with volunteers, they provide civil affairs, social security, medical, and legal services to nearby residents, helping weave a community network that offers all-round support. They regularly visit senior citizens, helping clean their homes and keeping them company; they also tutor migrant children with their schoolwork, offering care and support.
“I am home alone most of the time,” said a local resident in his 70s. “Social workers and volunteers often visit me and talk with me, bringing me warmth like sunshine.”
