Demolition for the Shatoujiao Checkpoint reconstruction project officially began on August 1, marking a move into the project’s substantive phase. The redevelopment aims to upgrade the checkpoint's facilities and expand capacity to meet rising cross-border travel and trade between Shenzhen and Hong Kong.

Since opening in 1985, Shatoujiao Checkpoint has served as a key land port for both passengers and cargo. Over time, however, its layout, clearance capacity and service levels have fallen behind current needs, and the original design can no longer handle actual traffic volumes. These constraints have prompted the decision to undertake a comprehensive rebuild.

The project will use a “cross-river” construction scheme to optimize functional layout and introduce more efficient customs inspection procedures.

Rebuilt as a passenger-only checkpoint, the new Shatoujiao Checkpoint is designed for a daily passenger throughput of up to 40,000, representing a major increase expected to speed clearances and improve the traveler experience.

The demolition phase is expected to take three to four months and will prepare the site for geotechnical surveys and subsequent main construction.
