Night school helps Yantian residents recharge and grow

Amid the rapid advancement of AI and digital technology, Yantian District is bringing the necessary skills to residents to use these tools effectively. The district has integrated digital content into night school courses across all 19 of its subdistricts, turning night schools into a popular choice for self-improvement and skill development.

These free courses serve all ages: teenagers receive psychological counseling, young adults sharpen professional skills, and seniors discover new hobbies. To date, more than 350 free lectures have attracted over 8,700 attendees.

For many, the courses are a rewarding alternative to screen time. “Attending an AI lecture is much more fun and useful than just playing on my phone,” said Ms. Wang. “I’ve learned to use AI tools to generate meeting notes and draft reports, which has greatly improved my work efficiency.”

Practical, career-oriented classes are a key focus. In Beishan Industrial Park, the community service center runs weekly sessions on new media operations and animation, helping young employees gain skills that support career advancement.

Over in the Yong’an community, systematic courses in short video production and livestreaming are empowering stay-at-home wives — including many spouses of container truck drivers — to learn new skills and launch small online businesses.

“It’s wonderful to learn something new right near my home. It’s even brought in extra income,” said Ms. Huang, who now attracts manicure clients by sharing short videos of her work. These training programs have opened up new, flexible employment opportunities for local women.

Bridging the digital divide for older residents is another important goal. At the Wutong Community Service Center in Haishan Subdistrict, seniors learn to use AI tools for creative tasks like composing ink paintings, writing songs, and editing Chinese opera videos. Seventy-two-year-old Chen has found great joy in producing opera videos with AI assistance.

Beyond professional instructors, the program also taps into local talent. Residents like Cui Sigang from the Yong’an community have stepped up as volunteer teachers. Cui alone has offered over 100 free lectures on using AI to boost productivity and run social media businesses.

In Xiaomeisha community, even summer camps have received a tech upgrade. An AI-themed camp has ignited the passion for science among local children and the children of migrant workers who spent their vacation in the city.

Through these diverse and accessible courses, Yantian’s night schools are not just teaching skills — they are fostering community connection, creating opportunities, and empowering residents of all ages to thrive in a digital world.
