Yantian Port handles record number of containers in Q1

From: Shenzhen Daily | Updated:2026-04-17

In the first quarter of 2026, Yantian Port handled 4.036 million TEUs of container throughput, an 8.9% increase year-on-year and a record high for the same period in its history. Monthly throughput has grown steadily for six consecutive months.

On April 11, the CMA CGM TOSCA, operating on the new Ocean Rise Express (OCR) route, slowly docked at Berth 16 of Yantian Port. With a capacity of 8,238 TEUs, the vessel handled 4,154 TEUs during its overnight stay at Yantian before heading to its next port of call, Rotterdam in the Netherlands.

The new OCR service is a weekly direct shipping route between Japan and Northern Europe, with rotating stops in Kobe, Nagoya, Yokohama, Xiamen, Yantian, Rotterdam, Hamburg, Southampton, Nansha, and finally back to Kobe.

The OCR service is the third new international freight route added at Yantian Port this year. Currently, the port operates nearly 100 international routes, reaching 146 ports across 46 countries and regions.

Thanks to smart systems deployed by the Yantian Border Inspection Station, the average waiting time for each international cargo vessel has been cut by two hours.

As one of the world's largest single-container terminals by throughput and a core international shipping hub in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, Yantian Port handles over one-third of Guangdong Province's foreign trade import and export volume and one-quarter of China's exports to the United States by value.
